One Voice

Everyone, no matter how spiritual a lifestyle you have, lives in the everyday
mundane world. Everyone goes to the corner convenience store, or to the mall. Most of us also read the paper, or catch the news from time to time. Even though we may not like what we see, we still have the need to be            informed, to know what is going on in the world around us.

I was at a friends house last week, when I asked if we could watch the news. My friend replied, "Do we have to? Everything on the news is so negative." Well, that got me to thinking about things. For the most part the news is all negative. Somebody robbed a liquor store on the south side of town, an apartment building burned down and killed the sleeping tenants. Is there no good news to report? Are there no people out there trying to make positive changes to their world? Did anyone plant a tree, or help a neighbor with something around the house?

As witches it is our responsibility to make a difference in the world that we live in. The changes that you make don't have to have a global impact, or cost a lot of money. The changes that you make can (and probably should) start smaller and closer to home.  Is there a charity that you feel truly serves the community? If so support them. I don't know of a single charitable organization that would turn down the gift of your time and experience. Is there a maybe a neighbor kid that needs an adopted Aunt or Uncle? What better way to change the world than to shape the viewpoint of a child??

You say that you have no patience with kids and no time to volunteer at a shelter. There are plenty of other things that you can do. Simple things that don't take much time or money but, can make a huge difference in our world.

Register and vote in every election. The local elections for the City Council and the School Board are every bit as important as the Presidential elections. We all live in the city. We all either have or know children in the public school system. Know your elected officials, on the city, state, and national levels. Write to them or e-mail them. You put them in office, they work for you. They need to know what you expect from them. How many times have you been stopped on your way into the store by someone asking you to sign a petition? It only takes a few minutes to sign you name and you will be making a difference.

Folks, ours is a beautiful and diverse religion. There is so much more to it than setting up an altar, and doing rituals. We are here for a reason. We can no longer afford to sit back and just let things "happen" as they will. We have the ability to change what we want changed. We are a large group that has been silent far to long! The important part of this is being able to put your faith into action. To give your convictions and ideals the chance to manifest and grow. To shape the world that your grandchildren will inherit. You don't have to let anyone know what your religious affiliations are, unless you want to. All they need to know is that you want to help, not who or when you worship. Take a stand! Let your voice be heard!

So mote it be. Storm Ryan
